Jason Momoa: Net Worth, Family, Age, Height, Diet & Bodybuilding Assessment

Key Takeaways

  2. If it werenā€™t for Jason lying during a casting call, he may have never made it to Hollywood.
  3. Continue reading to find out more about Jason Momoaā€™s fabricated resume and which role landed him inside the gym - for the first time.

Hereā€™s another installment of our celebrity series! This time, weā€™re showcasing Jason Momoa. He may have gotten a late start by Hollywood standards, but heā€™s been kicking ass and taking names.

Jason Momoa Street

Some may think Jason Momoa is related to Dwayne The Rock Johnson, but heā€™s not. They do share heritage with Polynesian ancestry, though, which gives them golden tans and impressive physiques. Will Jason Momoa become a wrestler like The Rock, or maybe a bodybuilder?

With his stats, Jason Momoa could hold his own just fine in the wrestling ring or bodybuilding competitions. Since the likelihood of that happening is slim, letā€™s see what the judges would say if he were to compete in bodybuilding.

Now, letā€™s look back at the life of Jason Momoa.

Biography

Joseph Jason Momoa was born August 1, 1979 in Honolulu, Hawaii. His father is Joseph Momoa, a painter, and his mother is Coni Momoa, a photographer. His parents separated when he was an infant, and he moved with his mom to her home state of Iowa.

Young Momoa

According to Jason, he was able to channel his upbringing into his role as Aquaman. He felt like a product of two different worlds, one of non-diverse Norwalk, Iowa and the other in Hawaii. As a teen, Jason spent summers in Nanakuli with his Hawaiian Ohana and then went back to Iowa for school.

He became quite the waterman in Hawaii, taking up surfing, diving, and other water-based activities. His father and mentors helped him build a deep love for the ocean, as discussed in a 2018 Hawaii News interview.

Though Jason wanted to stay with his Ohana in Hawaii, his father urged him to get educated on the mainland. He assured him that Hawaii would always be there, ā€œ[t]his is a place to rest, a place to gather your mind.ā€

As an only child, Jason was loved greatly by both sides of the family. Both his parents ensured he knew the history of his heritage, which is quite diverse:

  • Hawaiian
  • Native American
  • Irish
  • German

It was no surprise to either side, especially his Ohana, when he landed his first modeling gig. Or did he?

Jason Momoa: Theā€¦Model?

At the age of 19, Jason Momoa became a modelā€¦oh wait, no, he didnā€™t. Even though this information is widely dispersed as fact, according to Jason, he made it all up.

Yes, the Aquaman heartthrob made up his modeling career. You see, he went to the casting call for Baywatch: Hawaii and when it was his turn, he was asked for his resume. He didnā€™t have one, so he made up his modeling career right then since he also had no acting experience.

Down the line, a manager further made up his title of Hawaii Model of the Year. Luckily, it all worked out, and they cast him as Jason Ioane. He played the role from 1999 until 2001.

Jason Momoa came back in 2003 for Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding to play the same role. From 2004 to 2009, he played parts in the following TV series:

  • North Shore
  • Stargate Atlantis
  • The Game

He also starred in the movies Johnson Family Vacation and Pipeline. In 2011, Jason played the title role of Conan the Barbarian, in a television series based on the 1982 movie.

Momoa vs Schwarzenegger Conan

You know the one, made famous by Golden Era legend Arnold Schwarzenegger, who played the same part?

Jason Momoa called on his roots to help him win the part of Khal Drogo in HBOā€™s Game of Thrones. He performed a traditional Haka in his audition, which made him stand out above all the rest.

Though he was getting roles, Jason was still not a household name. All that would change in 2014.

Jason Makes a Name for Himself in Hollywood

The year 2014 would be a big one for Jason as he starred in several indie films:

  • Road to Paloma (also co-wrote, produced, and directed)
  • Debug
  • Wolves
Aquaman

In summer 2014, Jason auditioned for and got a cameo appearance as Aquaman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. This part sealed his position as Arthur Curry/Aquaman, placing him in the movies:

  • Justice League
  • Aquaman
  • The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (voice)

In between him portraying Aquaman, he also starred in Sugar Mountain, Once Upon a Time in Venice, and The Bad Batch. He also starred in and executive produced the TV series Frontier.

He was also cast in Canadian film Braven in 2015 and in 2017, took on a role in the movie series Just Cause. Dune, a Canadian/UK/U.S. collaboration, comes out in December 2020.

More recently, Jason plays a starring role in Apple TV+ā€™s See. He will also come back as Aquaman in 2021 in the TV series Zack Snyderā€™s Justice League

Production wrapped up on the Netflix thriller Sweet Girl earlier this year, with an expected release for 2021. Jason has the starring role and is also a producer on this film.

Though heā€™s been extremely busy on set and behind the scenes, heā€™s still not ready to quit. He may have found fame later than others in Hollywood, but heā€™s just getting his stride. We can expect to see much more of Jason Momoa as a writer, actor, and producer.

Of course, he couldnā€™t do some of these roles without a dedicated fitness routine and diet. Like almost everyone, Jason Momoa had to work hard to build his physique, both in and out of the gym.

Jason Momoaā€™s Bodybuilding Workouts & Fitness

Before making it big in Hollywood tv shows and movies, Jason Momoa was (and still is) an avid outdoorsman. Living outside LA, heā€™s able to spend time on land and in the ocean. Some of the activities he enjoys:

  • Skateboarding
  • Rock climbing
  • Hill sprints
  • Martial arts
  • Axe throwing
  • Surfing
  • Drinking Guinness (weā€™ll get to that more in the next section)

Jasonā€™s an early riser and loves to exercise as soon as he wakes up. He likes to climb for his cardio and then do some deep thinking before starting his day.

Jason Momoa didnā€™t actually start working out until he got his role as Conan the Barbarian. He finds traditional gym-style workouts boring and monotonous. He only trains when he has to for roles he plays, choosing to spend time outdoors when heā€™s not.

Jasonā€™s love for the outdoor sports helped him build up impressive grip strength and full-body strength. He just needed the bulk to go with it.

Jason Momoa Climbing

Trainer Eric Laciste had his work cut out for him with Momoa, having to create quick, intense workouts to build muscle. He created 30 minute supersets with heavy weights dubbed the AR7 workout plan. Hereā€™s an example of one of his routines:

  • Squats
  • Incline bench press
  • Shoulder press
  • Cable crosses
  • Pull-ups

Jason would do seven reps and seven sets, followed by seven seconds rest after each set. Then, heā€™d break for 30 seconds of rest before completing the same format with six and then five sets.

This routine helped him create his massive 50 inch chest. His arm workouts are the same, with different exercises:

Now that you know what it takes to get a physique like Jason Momoa, letā€™s look at his diet.

Jason Momoaā€™s Diet & Nutrition

Itā€™s no secret that Jason Momoa loves him some Guinness beer. In fact, he knew his wife was the one when they met at a bar and she ordered one first. Naturally, he said that his favorite beer had to be included in his fitness and diet routine.

As for his diet, Jason adopted a somewhat keto diet, choosing beer as his main carb source. His trainer created a macronutrient diet with high-protein, medium fat, and low carbs. He eats clean foods, including lean meat and fish with lots of green veggies and avoids junk foods.

Jason keeps a strict diet without processed sugar while heā€™s training, but all bets are off when heā€™s not. His typical daily diet would consist of the following foods:

  • Lean cuts of steak
  • Sashimi-grade fish (skipjack tuna, salmon, and barramundi are favorites)
  • Chicken
  • Vegetables
  • Fruit (before a workout or long shoot for sustained energy)
  • Peanut butter
  • Avocado
  • Olive oil
  • Honey sandwiches

As for supplements, Jason Momoa keeps it to a minimum. He takes protein powder, creatine, and a mass builder to help him reach high levels of muscle mass. We cannot confirm that he has taken any of our supplements, but we also canā€™t confirm that he hasnā€™t!

Though many say that Jason hit the genetic lottery (and we donā€™t disagree) he still has to eat right and work out. Even the most gifted of physiques have to put in some work, and he is no different.

Personal Life

Jason Momoa has been in a relationship with his wife Lisa Bonet since 2005. Eleven years his senior, Jason admits that Lisa was his childhood crush. He, of course, didnā€™t tell her that until they had kids

Being with Lisa made Jason believe that anything is possible, and he has the work ethic to prove it. While he shares some aspects of his life, like heavy metal and being an avid motorcycle lover, she is much more private.

Lisa and Jason are both heavily into activism and social justice. Jason was instrumental in the protest against the Thirty Meter Telescope in Mauna Kea. He has also most recently taken a stand to support Ray Fisher, fellow Justice League co-star.
