Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson: Net Worth, Wife, Daughter, Age, Height, Diet & Bodybuilding Assessment

  2. He started working out at the gym, channeling his anger and frustration into his workouts.
  3. He focused on football through college but the dream was short lived. He then turned to wrestling to continue his family’s legacy in the arena.

We devote this section of our Blog to showcasing the life and accomplishments of famous athletes and celebrities. Some have competed in the bodybuilding arena while others haven’t.

Regardless of their bodybuilding history, each celebrity/athlete profile includes a professional assessment. For those who have, we’ll illustrate both physical strong-points and weak-points throughout their career. For those who haven’t competed, we’ll include a section on “what the judges would say” if they had graced the stage.

The Rock Press Conference

Today, we’ll discuss the life and career of Dwayne The Rock Johnson.

His story is one that many can relate to – moving from state to state, finally settling and falling in with the wrong crowd. Dwayne Johnson could have become just another statistic, having been arrested multiple times by the age of 17.

Instead, he took out his anger and frustrations in the gym and vowed to turn his life around. He went to college and played football, then followed in his father’s footsteps to become a professional wrestler.

Wildly successful in the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) ring as The Rock, he decided to try his hand at acting. Now one of the highest grossing actors in the world, Dwayne Johnson will never forget his troubled beginnings.

Now, let’s consider what the judges may have said if The Rock had ever competed in the bodybuilding area.

What The Judges Would Say

Had The Rock chosen a career in bodybuilding, he would surely be an imposing figure on a bodybuilding stage standing 6’5” and weighing 265 pounds.

The Rock Muscles
The Rock In Promotional Image For WWE

For a competition, Dwayne would have to come down a little bit in weight to be really ripped. He has an impressive upper body with huge traps and big arms. But, he would need more thickness in his chest and bigger deltoids to appear wider onstage.

Of course, he would need comparable thighs and calves to balance out the upper body, but The Rock has more of a long torso with shorter legs. Those types of physiques usually have excellent leg development.

The highlight of The Rock competing in a bodybuilding contest would be his free posing routine where he would let his personality shine. You’d expect to see lots of “crab most muscular” shots with his tongue hanging out!

Biography

The Early Years, Before The Rock

Dwayne Johnson was born in Hayward, California to parents Ata Johnson (Maivia) and professional wrestler, Rocky Johnson (Wayde Douglas Bowles).

Before high school, he had lived in New Zealand, North Carolina, and Connecticut. During high school, he moved between Hawaii, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania.

A Young Dwayne Johnson Looking Up To His Father

At the age of 14, his family was facing eviction. His mother struggled with suicidal thoughts, which led to depression. He had several run-ins with the law. His charges included theft, fighting, and check fraud by the time he turned 17.

Dwayne could have continued down this path, but there was light at the end of the tunnel. He took his frustrations out in the gym, the Boys Club of Honolulu. He participated in football and wrestling at his high school. Then he went onto college, dreaming of pro football.

Hopeful Dreams of Football Fame

The Rock excelled at high school football, earning a full-ride scholarship to the University of Miami.

The young athlete played for the Miami Hurricanes from 1990 to 1994 and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology and Physiology in 1995. He played as a defensive lineman but was ultimately sidelined by injuries. He was eventually replaced by Warren Sapp.

He then entered the Canadian Football League as a backup linebacker for the Calgary Stampeders. He stayed on the practice roster until he was cut a short time later.

While football may have not been in the cards for The Rock, he was undeterred. He decided to try his hand at something he knew the men in his family were good at – wrestling.

How The Rock Became The Rock

In 1996, Dwayne Johnson entered the wrestling ring for the first time under his own name. He began as part of the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), now known as the WWE.

The Rock Wrestling Debut

To win a contract as part of the WWF, he had to try out first. That year, he wrestled as Flex Kavan first at Jerry Lawler’s United States Wrestling Association. He then won two titles at the USWA World Tag Team Championship that summer.

From there, he earned the right to sign a WWF contract. He was immediately thrown into the ring, no matter that he lacked real experience as a wrestler. After all, he was a third-generation wrestler, debuting as Rocky Maivia.

The Rock's Dad
Rocky Johnson In His Wrestling Prime

Dwayne Johnson’s maternal grandfather was Samoan-American pro wrestler Peter Maivia, and his father Rocky Johnson of the WWE. Like a duck takes to water, Dwayne was a natural in the ring.

He started out on Monday Night Raw and won the Intercontinental Championship in 1997. Though he was successful in the ring, the fans disliked his character and regularly booed him when on stage.

He reinvented himself as part of The Nation of Domination. He became sarcastic and started referring to himself as The Rock, always in third person. The more he heckled the fans, the more they loved him.

From there, he became “The People’s Champion”. He feuded with other wrestlers through the rest of the 1990s into the 2000s. He won eight WWE championships during his wrestling career.

But in 2000, he would start spending more time making movies.

It All Started on Saturday Night

Dwayne Johnson was asked to host the TV show Saturday Night Live in 2000. Before he knew it, he was getting requests to star in movies

He first starred as The Scorpion King in 2001’s The Mummy Returns. The movie had the highest grossing April ever in box offices, taking in $68.1 million on its opening weekend.

They weren’t beat until the following year, when Johnson got his leading role in The Scorpion King. That movie beat his first by $9 million during the first three days in theaters.

Johnson hasn’t looked back, though he was back and forth with wrestling until he officially retired in 2009. He’s starred in at least one movie every year, ever since his first.

Dwayne Johnson not only acts, but he also produces movies and TV shows. He is one of the most respected and highest paid actors in the world.

He always remembers growing up, being evicted, and battling depression. As Johnson says, “I like to use the hard times in the past, to motivate me today.”

Personal Life

Dwayne Johnson lives with his family, wife Lauren Hashian and daughters Jasmine and Tiana. He also has a daughter, Simone, with ex-wife Dany Garcia, who is still his manager and business partner today.

The Johnson family will once again make history in the WWE as the only fourth-generation group of wrestlers.

Simone has decided to put herself into the ring and try out sports-entertainment. With drive, determination, and humility like her father, the federation expects her to do well in her career.

Dwayne Johnson’s Bodybuilding Workouts & Fitness

The Rock has no secrets when it comes to his workout routines. He showcases them regularly on his YouTube & Instagram channels. He started sharing them when fans would ask on social media how he got in shape for Hercules

From His Instagram, The Rock Shows How He Works Out

According to Johnson, he looked to Golden Era bodybuilding legends like Reg Park and Steve Reeves for workout inspiration. “With a basic movement, with old-school movements, you can never go wrong. Basic training. Basic movement. Basic iron.”

His workouts vary depending on his goals for the next movie he’ll be in. He has three exercises that he considers his favorites:

He’s a fan of drop sets, especially when training his legs. Drop sets, with the fourth and final set including up to 80 reps.

He’s also released workouts under Project Rock, in collaboration with Under Armour. Using the #ProjectRock on YouTube, you can view his grueling workouts in the gym.

Things you’ll find in many of his workouts:

  • High volume reps
  • High intensity
  • Drop sets and supersets
  • A good amount of cable exercises
  • Grip changes to hit every angle of the muscle

Watching his videos, always with proper form and incredible focus, you can tell that The Rock works hard at building his physique. He spends over two hours each day exercising; he lifts five out of seven days and does cardio every day.

The Rock and Mr. Olympia

Though The Rock isn’t a bodybuilder, he definitely looks and trains like one. So, it couldn’t have been too much of a surprise to Olympia fans when he took the stage in 2016.

However, he wasn’t there to compete. Instead, he was hosting the event that year. He was also awarded the first-ever Man of the Century ICON award, where he made an important announcement during his acceptance speech.

2016 was the year he announced a partnership with Olympia/IFBB and his production company, Seven Bucks Production. The partnership included promotion and production to create excitement and anticipation leading up to Olympia weekend each year.

Rumors have been going around since that The Rock was interested in buying Mr. Olympia from the owner, American Media, Inc. For whatever reason, that did not happen and was confirmed with the recent announcement of its sale to Jake Wood.

Does that mean the end of Johnson’s involvement in bodybuilding competitions? Of course not. Well then, can you smell what The Rock is cooking?

Athleticon: A New Bodybuilding Competition to Rival the Olympia?

With a vested interest in the bodybuilding industry, and health and wellness, The Rock has created his own experience.

Coming in 2021, the very first Athleticon will take place in Atlanta, GA. The event promises “brands, speakers, competitions, and performances alongside immersive activities and inspiring content.”

Dwayne Johnson With Dany Garcia Promoting Athleticon

The event was created by The Rock and partner Dany Garcia. Rather than focus just on competing and bodybuilding, this family-friendly experience will include:

  • Dance sessions
  • Cooking classes
  • Lessons on endurance, longevity, and recovery
  • Mental health and healthy relationships
  • Yoga
  • Tech and gaming

Prize money has always been a big motivator for people who compete in competitions. Over the years, some competitors have said that the money awarded in Olympia/IFBB competitions have not increased with the hype. More rumors suggest that prizes at Athleticon may far outweigh what the IFBB offers.

It will be interesting to see how (and if) Athleticon compares to the Mr. Olympia.
Jim Manion, the IFBB Pro League President, doesn’t believe that any competition can outshine the Olympia. Only time will tell.

With an impressive physique, The Rock must have a sound diet and nutrition plan in place. Let’s look at what he eats to fuel his workouts.

Dwayne Johnson’s Diet & Nutrition

The Rock undoubtedly works hard in the gym, and he definitely enjoys himself when he eats. When he was preparing for his role as Hercules, he shared a copy of his meal plan for 22 weeks.

Each day he ate seven meals totaling over 4,000 calories. His daily food intake consisted of:

  • Halibut
  • Chicken
  • Steak
  • Vegetables: especially broccoli, asparagus, onions, peppers, mushrooms
  • Egg whites
  • Cream of wheat or oatmeal
  • Casein protein powder
  • White rice

Johnson regularly shares his meals on both Twitter and Instagram, along with his workouts. Both the healthy and not so healthy, like his cheat meals, which sometimes include 12 pancakes, 12 brownies. He may even have a double dough pizza or two if he’s still feeling hungry!

For The Rock, it’s all in a day’s work. He’ll usually end one of his grueling days with a glass of his handmade tequila, Teramana.

One of the reasons he is so humble and down to earth is that he has never forgotten where he came from. He uses his worst days as motivation to continue pushing.
