Testosterone Boosters: Pros and Cons Explained

Key Takeaways

  1. Testosterone is a hormone that is justifiably regulated in the U.S. in supplements and treatments.
  2. While most men experience significant loss in testosterone in their 40s and 50s, some will experience it much earlier. Some form of supplement or treatment may be required.
  3. Read on to see the difference between different testosterone boosters through those that are banned, fully natural, and those deemed legal in the U.S.

As you age, your body begins to produce less and less testosterone. Once you reach your 40s, your T levels will decline by about 1% per year.

Itā€™s no surprise when a man in his 40s or 50s begins to suffer from the effects of low testosterone. It seems..normal. Almost a given result of aging.

Young Athlete

Though you may be thinking, Iā€™m in my 20s, I wonā€™t have to worry about this for a long time! ā€“ thatā€™s not always the case.

Men of all ages can suffer from low T, though it is less common in guys in their 20s or 30s. In fact, men worldwide have significantly lower T levels than those living decades ago.

The modern diet combined with a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, binge drinking, and stress are all contributing factors. Role changes in the household, men working less physically-demanding jobs, and other lifestyle trends are also.

If you notice any of these symptoms, you could have low T levels:

  • Depression
  • Overweight
  • Feeling tired all the time
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Low sex drive
  • Loss of body hair
  • Lean muscle mass loss
  • Less beard growth

Studies indicate that a trip to the doctor may have you leaving with a prescription for Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) if itā€™s found you do indeed have low T levels. Surprising or not, the United States leads with the heaviest amount of testosterone prescriptions in men over 40.

TRT may work for some, but itā€™s definitely not for everyone. We go into more detail on the pros and cons of TRT here.

TRT experimental

If TRT isnā€™t an option, what else can you do?

If you donā€™t want to go through the hassle of finding the right dosage that works for you, and the cost, Testosterone boosters might be a better (and more affordable) option.

Simply put, testosterone boosters are supplements containing a blend of herbs, vitamins, and minerals that are proven to work together to boost T levels.

There are many products on the market making big claims, but they are not without drawbacks.

Other products and their drawbacks

Natural

There are lots of options out there for testosterone boosters you can try. A lot of them contain proprietary blends of products promised to provide an edge over a competitorā€™s product.

The problem with these blends is you have no idea whatā€™s in them.

How can you make an informed decision about the right testosterone booster for you if you donā€™t know whatā€™s actually in it?

Doctor Explains

The answer is: you canā€™t.

We donā€™t play that game here at Old School Labs. Each of our products includes a comprehensive list of each and every ingredient included, with proportions of each ingredient per dose. We even let you know WHY we chose the ingredients we do.

Oh, and all our products are responsibly sourced and made right here in the good olā€™ U S of A (California, to be specific).

Old School Labs was built on transparency because thatā€™s what our customers have grown to expect from us. We find the best quality ingredients we can source that are still cost-effective.

This place is about doing things the Old School Way ā€“ no fillers, nothing inside that wonā€™t provide a benefit to you, backed by research.

Donā€™t be fooled by the ā€œproprietary blendsā€ out there.

Banned

Some testosterone boosters have been banned and are illegal to purchase and consume. Others are available for purchase but are banned for athletes as part of the Anti-Doping Policy.

Banned Pills

If you are planning to compete at any level in sports, including weightlifting, powerlifting, and bodybuilding, here are just a few of the products banned by the USADA:

  • Anabolic agents (steroids, SARMS, and prescription testosterone top this list)
  • Any type of growth factor hormone
  • Beta-2 agonists (inhalers, though some exceptions can be made for those with asthma and have a true need for it)
  • Hormones and metabolic modulators (including aromatase inhibitors used to block estrogen)
  • Diuretics and other masking agents (including water pills)

As you can see from this list, anyone competing has very limited ways they can boost testosterone, regardless of the reason. Testosterone boosting supplements, depending on ingredients, donā€™t make the list.

Testosterone boosters come in pill form, but also as a gel or injection, either over-the-counter or prescription. While testosterone boosters will never provide the same result as steroids, they do work for some.

Workout pills

In 2019, the FDA approved a new medication for men with certain forms of hypogonadism. While it may work, the medication could cause dangerous increases in blood pressure, which can increase chances of heart attack, stroke, and even death.

Though legal, all forms of prescribed testosterone medications have side effects like this.

This is why we here at Old School Labs provide precise instructions for our customers, including when to take a break from them. If you havenā€™t checked our reviews, you should. When taken properly as instructed, our products donā€™t have side effects like other legal testosterone boosters on the market.

PEDs in general and their impact on performance

PEDs, or performance-enhancing drugs, are substances used to provide an improvement on human activity. This includes ergogenic aids used by athletes and also nootropics typically used by students to improve their academic performance.

When used for this specific reason, some may even consider caffeine to be a PED!

At this time, vitamins and protein supplements are not considered PEDs, so there are no worries with taking Vintage Boost.

Vintage Boost Ingredients and their Effects

When it comes to boosting your testosterone levels, the right product makes all the difference.

When we began formulating Vintage Boost, we carefully selected ingredients that work together synergistically to boost your T levels so you can get the pump you need from your workout without any side effects.

Vitamin D3

There is a proven link between low vitamin D and low testosterone levels, and supplementing with this vitamin is critical to raising testosterone.

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6

Typically found in fresh vegetables, vitamin B6 helps with testosterone synthesis. It is also linked to amino acid, glucose, and lipid metabolism.

Magnesium

Deficient magnesium levels are directly linked to low testosterone. Magnesium is also involved in multiple biochemical reactions of metabolic function including energy production, cardiovascular regulation, and exercise performance.

Zinc

Vital for testosterone production, this essential trace element is lost through sweating, and needs regular replenishing.

D-Aspartic Acid and PrimavieĀ® Shilajit Extract

A dietary amino acid which, when cycled appropriately, is proven to increase testosterone levels by acting as a natural regulator for testosterone synthesis.

An adaptogen that has been used since ancient times, the PrimaVie variant has been shown in clinical studies to enhance male reproductive health, better male sexual function and promote healthy testosterone levels.

Combining these two powerful ingredients provides optimal muscular strength retention, with DAA being one of the best natural testosterone boosting ingredients available on the market.

Tribulus Fruit Extract and Maca Root Powder

Though it is commonly promoted for its testosterone-increasing effects, the tribulus terrestris plant also enhances libido, energy, virility and vitality.

Tribulus terrestris in the wild

Maca root is a natural root that is proven to enhance libido, help with sexual dysfunction, and improve mood. It also has an anti-estrogenic and estrogen-regulating effect.

The combination of the two boost athletic performance in and out of the gym while also working together to help you shed unwanted pounds.
